Lil Wayne and Will.i.am Collect BMI Urban Awards

Young Money hitmaker Lil Wayne continues to maintain a strong presence in the music world by collecting the BMI Urban Award for urban songwriter of the year award for the second year in a row.



The rapper, who is currently serving a year in prison after pleading guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, was recognized Friday (September 10th) for writing six hit songs during the past year, including Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” and R&B singer Keri Hilson’s “Turnin’ Me On.”



In addition to Lil Wayne, the BMI Urban Awards honored Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am. with its Presidents Award for as well as urban song of the year for his group’s popular song, “Boom Boom Pow.”

The rapper/producer received the President’s Award for his work as an artist, producer and humanitarian.

Other award winners included Polow da Don for urban producer of the year and EMI Music Publishing, which earned the award for urban publisher of the year.

Kanye West and R. Kelly were among those named as top urban producers by BMI, which also highlighted Sean Garrett, Shondrae "Bangladesh" Crawford, L.O.S., Daniel "Kane Beatz" Johnson and Da Mystro.

The BMI Urban Music Awards, which were held at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, honors the songwriters, producers and music publishers of the most-performed R&B, rap and Hip-Hop songs from last year.

Songwriters for No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Rap Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts were acknowledged before the annual event as the BMI/SunTrust #1 Show honored Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind," Katy Perry's "California Gurls," B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" and Eminem's "Not Afraid."

Gucci Mane Enlists Bun B., Nicki Minaj On 'The Appeal

Rapper Gucci Mane has announced the track listing and release date for his new album The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted, which is due in stores September 28th.

The album is the follow-up to the rapper's 2009 release The State Vs. Radric Davis, which hit stores just as Gucci Mane was sent to prison for 12 months, for violating his probation, by testing positive for drugs.

The new album from Gucci features an all-star lineup of Hip-Hop and R&B acts. Artists like Bun B., Pharrell, Wyclef, Estelle and Nicki Minaj make guest appearances on the The Appeal.

“Unfortunately, my incarceration also came at a pivotal point in my career, just as my first major label album was dropping,” Gucci shortly after he was released from jail. “I was forced to miss what should have been one of the proudest moments of my life.”

Gucci is currently finishing up a nationwide tour of the country to promote The State Vs. Radric Davis, as well as his new album The Appeal.

“I set out five years ago to be the #1 rapper in Hip-Hop. That journey continues with an even sharper focus,” Gucci Mane said.

DMX has been tapped to open up for Eminem during the Epicenter 2010 Festival in California. In addition to Eminem and DMX, artists like Big Boi, Blink-182, Kiss, Papa Roach, Rise Against, Bush and 30 Seconds to Mars will hit the stage. The general fans won't see DMX perform, unless they hold VIP tickets to the backstage area, where he will give the exclusive performance. The event, which takes place at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, will also feature the first Southern California show with a reunited House of Pain as well. The Epicenter 2010 Festival in California takes place this Saturday (September 11th).

The executive producer of the VMA's has shot down reports that rapper Kanye West and country singer Taylor Swift will "reunite" during the awards show this Sunday (September 12th). Kanye West and Taylor Swift are slated to both attend the awards show, which will feature a performance by Kanye West. According to the VMA's executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic, there is no chance for a duet between the pair. "I hope that we move on from it," Ignjatovic told Billboard. "It feels like it's time. It was a year ago." Other performers include Eminem, B.o.B., Swizz Beatz, Mary J. Blige, Drake, Linkin Park and Justin Bieber.

More details have emerged surrounding an early morning incident at the rapper's Las Vegas mansion on Thursday. According to Floyd's ex-girlfriend Josie Harris, the boxer allegedly pulled her by her hair, threw her on the ground and struck her in the head. According to TMZ.com, Harris then claimed Floyd began "dragging me on the floor and twisting my arm back ... in attempt to try and break it." Josie Harris claimed that the altercation started when Mayweather became upset over Harris' new boyfriend. At press time, police have not charged Floyd Mayweather Jr. with any crime. Josie Harris is now seeking a restraining order against Mayweather.

Breaking News: Petey Pablo Arrested For Gun At Airport

Rapper Petey Pablo was arrested today (Sept. 11) for attempting to get a concealed weapon though security at a North Carolina airport.

Police say that the artist was apprehended at Raleigh-Durham International Airport and booked on weapons charges.

TMZ reports that Pablo was on his way to the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles when the gun was seen in a carry on bag.

Airport security notified police of Pablo’s alleged violation.

Pablo, real name Moses Barrett III, was formally charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm.

He has since posted $50,000 and has been freed. He is slated to appear in Wake County Court on September 13.

Airport security is particularly tight on September 11, due to the nature of the tragic incident that fell the World Trade Center nine years ago.

Calling into New York radio station Hot 97 Thursday (September 9) night, 50 blamed celebrity groupie Kat Stacks for setting him up and said the 20 year-old rapper does not do cocaine.

Fabolous, who is known for starting trending topics on Twitter with his tweets, lashed out at Soulja Boy after footage of him hit the net with Katt Stacks in a hotel room, allegedly using cocaine.

Although Soulja Boy has denied any drug use, Fabolous berated him on Twitter, to his 631, 337 followers.

"Lettin Kat Stacks in ur hotel room alone is #StupidBoySwag," Fabolous tweeted last month. "All u rappers pay attention, that right there is called#StupidBoySwag* AYYYY."

Fab continued the insults, which Soulja Boy has finally replied to.

Although he deleted some of the more aggressive tweets from last night, today (September 7th), Soulja Boy resumed his threats to Fabolous via Twitter.

"I will murder that ni**a fab in a freestyle battle he garbage compared to soulja boy," Soulja Boy tweeted today. "I tell you what Fabolous get yo weak ass on wax and spit them weak ass bars so I can s**t on you boy."

Rapper 50 Cent continues to shake up the "Twitterverse" with a series of tweets today that drew the scorn of celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton.

The rap star took to his Twitter page today (September 6th) and took aim at Perez Hilton, who labeled 50 Cent a "douche bag" in a tweet.

Today, 50 Cent addressed the issue when he jokingly tweeted that he had a friend shoot up a gay wedding, along with a link to a picture of people fleeing a tragic scene.

Hilton immediately noticed the tweets and replied.

"50 Cent joking about violence towards gays is about as expired as the days when he used to be musically relevant," Perez Hilton tweeted.

50 replied that he wasn't scared of the "pink mafia," an alleged underground powerful group of gay Hollywood movers and shakers.

The rapper posted another link to a man on a subway doing a split with the quotation: "You're dead 50! Dead! We are looking for your ass!"

50 Cent then urged Hilton to calm down.

"Stop being so sensitive its a joke," 50 Cent tweeted. "Your acting like a big baby have a nice day…And my next song will make your sweet ass dance lol chill out."

Perez Hilton insinuated that 50 Cent might be a homosexual, accusations that were also levied at the rapper by openly gay singer, Rufus Wainwright in an April issue of Details magazine.

Eminem, Jay-Z Rock Detroit With All-Star Lineup

Rappers Eminem and Jay-Z kicked off a four-date tour last night (September 2nd) at Detroit's Comerica Park.

Over 40,000 people filled the stadium to catch a glimpse of the two famous rappers, who are doing two shows at Comerica Park and another two in New York at Yankee's Stadium on September 13th and 14th.

Atlanta rapper B.o.B. opened the show, with a half-hour set, flanked by the huge video set that takes a crew of about 300 to set up.

Jay-Z was dressed in all black, and performed a medley of his best known hits, including "Big Pimpin," "Forever Young" and "Hard Knock Life," with the help of longtime associate, Memphis Bleek and a guest appearance from Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy.

After an hour-long set, Jay-Z labeled the experience as "one of the best experiences" of his "entire life."

Eminem hit the stage shortly after Jay-Z, around 10:40PM and gave an energetic set of songs like "Won't Back Down," "Kill You" "Cleaning Out My Closet" "Lose Yourself" and others.

During his set, which included a live band and The Alchemist as a DJ, Eminem brought out Trick Trick, D12, Drake, Lloyd Banks, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre, who promised fans that his highly anticipated album Detox "is coming."

"I'm so motherf**king happy to be back," an excited Eminem told his fans.

According to reports, Rihanna and Lady Gaga are expected to hit the stage during tonight's (September 3rd) show.

Former Atlanta Mayor Suggests T.I. Was Pulled Over For 'Driving While Black'

Former Atlanta Mayor Andy Young has weighed in on the arrest of T.I., claiming the rapper may have been stopped for "DWB - Driving While Black."

T.I. and his wife Tameka "Tiny" Cottle were arrested after they were stopped in the rapper's Maybach on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, for allegedly making an illegal U-turn.

Police allegedly smelled the odor of marijuana, searched the vehicle and uncovered a small amount of ecstasy and what is reported to be meth-amphetamines.

Young questioned the police's initial intent when they stopped the chart-topping rapper/actor, who recently starred in the #1 hit movie, Takers.

“There’s another culture in L.A. that I don’t understand,” Young told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Most people in Los Angeles would wonder why he was stopped. I don’t know why they should have been stopped ... When a black man is stopped and not speeding … you call that driving while black.”

Young, who officiated T.I.'s wedding to Tiny in July, also counseled T.I. after the rapper pleaded guilty to federal drug charges.

T.I. immediately notified his probation officer of the arrest, as required by the terms of his probation.

At press time, T.I. is heading back to Atlanta. He will most likely have to appear in court where Judge Charles Pannell Jr. could revoke his probation and send the rapper to jail.

"T.I. is going to be back on his way to Atlanta in the next 24 hours," Don Samuel, one of T.I.'s lawyers, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's almost certain he'll end up appearing before the court here. But without knowing all the facts, it's premature to speculate what the court is likely to do."

According to the terms of T.I.'s probation, the rapper cannot possess or use any narcotic, or frequent any place drugs are sold, used or administered.

The rapper plans to release a book called "Teenage Millionaire" in conjunction with his next album, The DeAndre Way, scheduled for release next month.
Soulja Boy told MTV News during his recent appearance on "RapFix Live," that his tome will be about his navigation through the music business.

"It talks about me making my first million dollars at 17 years old," Soulja Boy explained. "I talk about how my life changed. It talks about the music industry, everything I learned about the music industry — how I got into the music industry with my mind set, all the ins and outs that I go through. All the chapters break down my beliefs and what steps and methods I took to get in this position. I just go and break [them] down into detail. I just want all my fans to read it when my album drops and have a good read and feel where I'm coming from."

SB is currently enjoying the success of "Pretty Boy Swag," which rests at #12 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The rapper is in Los Angeles this week to shoot the video for one of his next singles, "Blowing Kisses."

In July, Soulja Boy told MTV News that "Speakers Going Hammer" would be his next single. "Basically, it's all about the sound of the music," he said about the Boi-1da-produced track. "I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars, another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it's another hit."

B.o.B was fortunate enough to land Eminem as a guest on his debut album 'B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray,' but now the ATL rapper will take it a step further when he opens for Em and Jay-Z at Detroit's Comerica Park on Sept. 2 and 3.

The shows are already being dubbed the "World Series of Hip-Hop." With the addition of Bobby Ray, Jay-Z will still open up for Eminem in his hometown, while the Detroit emcee will return the favor at the second set of concerts at Yankee stadium in New York the following weekend.

Each of the Detroit concerts is expected to pull in about 40,000 fans and the show's production director, Dan Parise, has revealed that the set will feature heavy video elements and special effects. Preparations for the concerts have been months in the making and Eminem recently revealed that fans should expect to hear some classic Slim Shady songs in addition to tracks from his latest album 'Recovery.' "I don't want to give anything away," Em told Billboard, explaining that he planned to cover a variety of material. It "will probably be all over the place," he said. "Hopefully it'll be songs that everyone is familiar with."

Additional tickets for the Detroit show went on sale early Wednesday morning, giving fans another chance to score seats. The duo will take their home-and-home concert set to Yankee Stadium in New York on Sept. 13 and 14.

Gorilla Zoe is working on a new album, after recently completing a deal with Block Entertainment, E1 and Atlantic Records.

The new deal will allow the rapper's third studio album King Kong to be on shelves by October.

"A new era of Block Entertainment is launching through my partnership with eOne and Atlantic," Russell "Block" Spencer told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "Gorilla Zoe is first up on my team to takeover with his third solo album, King Kong."

Block Entertainment is known for launching or helping guide the careers of artists like Boyz N Da Hood, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Jody Breeze and others.

Drake Fancies Hollywood, "He's Not Gonna Be The Teen Heartthrob"

oung Money CEO Cortez Bryant has given an update on Drake's film career dreams and what movie roles the rap star is looking to take on.

Bryant also said he did not want Drake to fall into typical movie characters.

"We wanna start entertaining these movie offers. Drake is looking to come out with the role no one else expects. He's not gonna be the teen heartthrob or the college kid. He wants roles where he can show his acting skills. Like a sci-fi or action picture." (VIBE)

Last spring, Drake opened up about his disappointment in movie role choices.

"That's probably my biggest goal is to get back into acting and really pick the right projects," he said in an interview. "I've been reading different scripts but I know what I want to do and what type of project I want to be involved in and I've just been getting the typical projects that they'd offer to a new rapper, and it's like, ehh. That's not really what I want to do, or how I see myself...I can actually act. I've studied acting. I've studied the craft and I'm also very open to receiving a role and committing my time whether it's two weeks, a month, two months, before the movie starts shooting to really get into that role. Like I know what it is to do character research and really live as someone else in preparation for a movie, so that's something I'm willing to do. In April, the rapper talked about making a move into television.

"Television is sort of an exhausting, repetitive format to be in but I'm definitely, like after this album and I have another project I have in mind that I want to do but after that I'll probably get back into some movies, yeah. Earlier this summer, Drake said he would be interested in playing United States' President Barack Obama in a film.

Lil Wayne Loads Up Tech N9ne From Behind Bars

fter being publicly praised by Lil Wayne in a recent interview, Midwest emcee Tech N9ne has revealed that a collaboration with the incarcerated rapper is already in the works.

Despite having never met Wayne, Tech opened up about his anticipation to share studio time with the Young Money leader.

"His people have been contacting us already, so I'm anxious to see what he sends me," N9ne said in an interview. "I'm hearing his camp is all ready to send over some music. And I'll be in New York soon so hopefully I can visit him before he gets out. I just want to thank Wayne for even mentioning me. I've been following his career since he started. Just watching him evolve--he was always clever with the rhymes. My own quest was always to get my music out to everybody in [the] world and working with Wayne is truly a way to get it out there." In an interview with radio host Funkmaster Flex last month, Wayne revealed his admiration for Tech.

"I've been saying to myself that I really want to do a song with either Andre 3000 or my man...Tech N9ne," he said. "Other than that, I've been really trying to do a song with this little dude, this boy Weezy. That boy Weezy, he's stupid [laughs]." (Hip Hop DX)

Along with a collaboration, Wayne will reportedly be dropping his Tha Carter IV upon his release from jail this November.

"Tha Carter IV plans we had and still have are to put Tha Carter IV out the day he comes out [of prison]," Young Money President Mack Maine said in an interview. "He had so many songs for Tha Carter IV, we said let's just put these 10 songs out [on I Am Not a Human Being] and double-back for Tha Carter IV. He has more songs for Tha Carter IV that are still strong...It's basically me, him, Baby and [manager] Cortez Bryant mapping it out. We had a listening session out here. It was me, Baby and Cortez. I let [Wayne] know these are the ones we picked. He already picked six of them from back there. I let him hear it over the phone. I book him a studio session -- kinda like I did for the 'Light Up' up remix with Drake. I book him a studio session and let him listen [to tracks] over the phone. 'Do you like this one?' 'Yeah?'" When he is released, Wayne will also be performing at a "Welcome Home Weezy" concert.

A fitting homecoming is already being planned for Lil Wayne. The day after he is expected to be released from jail, the Cash Money rapper will celebrate by throwing a welcome home concert. Drake made the announcement during his Ustream session on Thursday, saying it would take place on November 5, but an exact location was not disclosed. Drizzy has a show the day before in Los Angeles and the day after in Las Vegas. Lil Wayne is serving his time at Rikers Island in New York. "Undisclosed location, November 5, the Welcome Home Weezy concert," said Wayne's protégé while sipping on Pinot Grigio in his Toronto crib. "You might as well camp out at all different locations. Eminem's Next Single Will Be the Lil Wayne Collabo 'No Love'

Eminem's 'Recovery' hit the double platinum mark in mid-August, becoming the best-selling rap album of the year, after a successful eight-week run on the charts.he album's second single 'Love the Way You Lie' featuring Rihanna, settled atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for five consecutive weeks following its debut and now Em is gearing up to release the album's third single. Shady confirmed to Billboard that the Lil Wayne-featured track 'No Love' is set to debut next.

"I did a song with Wayne called 'Drop the World' for his ['Rebirth'] album and we had just agreed to do an even swap," Eminem said, explaining the origin of the collaboration. "So I wanted him on my album. I kind of waited and when [producer] Just Blaze had finished the beat we jumped on it."

Eminem is currently preparing to perform with Jay-Z for their September 2 and 3 concerts in Detroit's Comerica Park followed by September 13 and 14 performances at Yankee Stadium in New York City. "I don't want to give anything anyway," Em told Billboard about the show, but he revealed that his performance "will probably be all over the place," instead of being focused on 'Recovery.' "Hopefully it'll be songs that everyone is familiar with," he said.
